The Scene at Giant Despair Hill Climb
We just got back from covering the Giant Despair Hill Climb in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and it was an awesome day full of engine roars and adrenaline. This event is known for its steep, challenging course that really pushes drivers to the limit. From the moment we arrived, you could feel the energy in the air as everyone got ready to race. Jeffrey and I set up on the upper side of the road with our cameras, ready to catch the action from above, while Jong took position further down, armed with his Nikon Z6 to snap close-up shots of the cars as they launched uphill.
Capturing the Action
With my Canon R6 and Jeffrey’s Sony, we got right into it, filming the early runs. The drivers were impressive, navigating those sharp turns and steep climbs like pros. We were focused not just on the cars but also on the expressions of the drivers and the reactions from the crowd. Our spot gave us a great wide view of the cars racing up the hill, really showing off how tough the course is. Jong was down by the start line, getting up-close shots of the cars as they powered off. His position was perfect for catching the intensity of each launch.
The Drivers Push Their Limits
As the day went on, the racing got more intense. One by one, the cars took their shot at the hill. We watched a classic Porsche expertly handle a sharp corner, followed by a Subaru WRX tearing through with crazy speed and control. Jeffrey and I were locked in, adjusting our cameras to make sure we captured every unique moment. The engines echoed through the trees, and we didn’t miss a beat, catching all the high-speed moments that made this hill climb so special.
Jong’s Close-Up Photography
Meanwhile, Jong’s Nikon Z6 was getting those detailed shots that bring the event to life. From the shine on the cars to the intense focus on the drivers’ faces, he was really capturing the essence of the event. One of his standout shots was of a BMW M3 kicking up a cloud of dust as it launched from the start. You could see the raw power and speed in every frame. His close-ups are going to pair perfectly with the wide, sweeping shots Jeffrey and I got.

The Thrill of the Climb
As the final cars took on the hill, the energy was at its peak. From our spot at the top, Jeffrey and I had a full view of the course and could see the final push from each car. The engines were working overtime, and we were right there to catch the action as they rounded the last bend. It was intense—especially when a Dodge Challenger powered through, with the crowd cheering all along the course. You could feel the drivers giving it everything they had.
Wrapping Up a Day of Adrenaline
At the end of the day, we wrapped up our coverage and started reviewing the footage. We were pretty proud of the shots we got—each one telling a different story of speed, power, and determination. Jong’s photos, combined with the dynamic footage Jeffrey and I filmed, are going to give people a real feel for what it was like to be there. It’s been a thrilling day, and we’re already excited about next year’s event. But for now, we’ll let the video we created do the talking—it’s going to capture the spirit of Giant Despair and the passion of every driver who took on the challenge.
